The incident took place in Indian River County. A 35-year-old woman named Alexis Ritter was already charged with one count of felony cruelty to animals. The dog was found with open wounds and was covered in its own waste.
Deputies were deployed to the home of Ritter after they received a call from a woman who asked them to check the welfare of the animal. Ritter even told the deputies that it was already dead and ran away but when she was asked more about the animal, she directed them to a room. The dog was seized and was taken to a vet for medical treatment.
The woman remains in jail on a $10,000 bail.
