Do you know why dogs eat their own poop sometimes? It’s one of the grossest things our pets can do, but scientists say there are several reasons why dogs do it.
– This doggy habit of eating poop is scientifically called coprophagia.
– A study in 2012 found out that 16 percent of dogs are serious poop eaters.
– Scientists say this could be an innate predisposition to scavenge when there’s no other option.
At a certain point in the life of a dog, it is actually normal for them to eat poop. Puppies do it naturally, eating their own poop but also other dog’s poop sometimes.
This behavior is not harmful, but once they eat other animal’s poop, they could get sick from the toxins, virus or parasites they ingest.
Coprophagia among puppies is considered to be a part of the process of growing up.
Most puppies won’t actually eat the poop; they will just smell it, but others do tend to take them in.
