When you are teaching your dog more challenging commands, it is usual for your dog to get confused. When this happens, you should be patient and repeat teaching the behavior.
Dogs get confused during training
Don’t get frustrated
Be calm during training
Don’t allow your dog to make mistakes. If he doesn’t get your instructions withing 2 to 3 attempts, stop. Mistakes are part of the learning process but making too many causes confusion and frustration which stops the learning process.
When you have a confused dog, remain calm and drop 10 treats on the ground for your dog. Take a few breaths and relax for a few minutes. Only resume when you or your dog feel okay. Pushing, tugging or yelling at your dog will only make the situation worse.
Make sure to use the same word in teaching the command, so that your dog won’t get confused further. Do it repeatedly, and be open to the possibility of having to do it again for the next session.
