Six people were arrested, convicted, and jailed for maintaining an area for illegal dog fighting. They were all sentenced to two and a half years behind bars and the other good news about this is that 14 doggos were rescued from their misery.

All the 14 dogs are pit bulls and were rescued by the National Council of SPCAs back in 2018 somewhere in South Africa. It is unclear where the dogs are now and if they have been rehomed. In addition to spending time in jail, those convicted are barred from having any kind of animal in the future.
Accordingly, dog fighting is a growing criminal activity in the area. Belinda Abrahams, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, said that they believe abuse of animals is also linked to abuse of people. She shared, “Individuals who commit violent acts against a vulnerable entity such as animals are up to nine times more likely to commit violent acts against vulnerable people, such as women and children.”
