A dog trainer took to Facebook to say that the “sniff test” should not actually be done. This test is when a stranger extends his or her hands to a doggo he or she just met.
– A dog trainer said that people should stop doing the “sniff test.”
– This test is done by strangers to doggos they just met by extending their hand.
– The best way to acquaint yourself to new doggos is to…
According to the dog trainer, although “extending a hand to someone we just met means a sign of friendship” to humans, it should not be done with doggos when people first meet them. This is because humans have no clear understanding of the sniff test. With the sniff test, doggos will feel cornered and threatened by the body posture of the human approaching them.
The dog trainer continued to share that the most important step is to approach the dog by asking permission to actually touch the dog because doggos have their own ways of reacting when meeting strangers for the first time. Once you get the permission, the dog trainer said the right gesture is to “turn your body and your face away at a 45-degree angle and smile.” Through this, the dog will feel safer.
