An African painted doggo named Annie was sent to the Topeka Zoo in Kansas in order to find a mate. However, days later, the doggo was killed.

Annie was introduced to three male painted doggos and one of them was supposed to be a mate. The move was part of a Species Survival Plan but what turned out to be a great plan at first ended deadly. According to the staff at the zoo, the female painted dog was first introduced to the alpha male and it went well. The meeting also went great for the second dog. However, the third and last dog attacked Annie when the two were introduced to each other. Annie received life-threatening injuries from the incident.
Staff intervened but it took two minutes to break up the fight. The female painted dog was taken to a hospital but died hours later. Today, there are only 6,600 painted dogs in the wild.
