These dogs are being trained in Maryland and by a state employee with the Maryland Department of Agriculture. The job of the dogs is to find traces of a bacteria called American foulbrood, which could destroy beehives. The expansion of training dogs to do such job is due to the fact that honeybees are vital to the food industry since they pollinate around 1/3 of the nation’s crops.
The state employee certifies that each beehive goes to other states free from the bacteria. The first dog that she successfully trained was in 2014. She recently received funding to train more dogs to do the job.
