A dog was re-homed after the dog owner was not able to claim the animal at the pound due to financial reasons. This is now being questioned because a law in Christchurch City allows the council to take ownership over dogs and they can either have them adopted out or put them down if unclaimed after seven days.

The dog owner owned the doggo for even years but because she cannot pay the pound fee immediately, her dog is now owned by another person. She was three days late when she was supposed to get her dog but was shocked about what she found out. According to Helping U Help Animals, the dog owner could have talked to the pound and asked them to hold on to the dog until she got the money to retrieve her pet.
The council has not commented on the matter yet but there are other cities implementing the same rules.
