According to reports, the team where the doggo belongs, which was Richie Beattie’s, finished the race last Thursday. However, while a post-race checkup was done on the dogs, the Iditarod Trail Committee veterinarians found that the five-year-old doggo was exhibiting sign of pneumonia. The dog was then taken to an animal hospital on Friday but died by Saturday. The official cause of death remains unknown but a necropsy will soon be conducted to determine such.
The People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) announced recently that the Iditarod was responsible for the dog’s death. PETA noted that the dog was just a family dog but the “Iditarod forced her to run until she choked to death on her own vomit, just like so many dogs before her.” They added that the dogs who survive suffer from lung damage and gastric ulcers.
