The incident took place over the weekend and accordingly, the dog was a pit bull. It was initially tied but later got away and charged at the horse. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s authorities were patrolling the area during the annual parade and they were on mounted horses. One of the deputies tried to taser the dog but did not succeed because he might end up hurting the horse. The dog continued to menace the horses so when it attacked a third time, it had to be shot. The dog was shot only once.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement that shooting the dog was a difficult decision because the deputy spends his career working with animals. Chronister added that if the deputy did not shot the dog, “there could have been many more injuries and potential losses had the horse been badly injured, not only to the horse itself, but also to the deputy riding him, the crowd of people walking nearby on Bayshore Blvd and the other horses who could have reacted due to their herd mentality.”
The dog owner is said to be homeless but was not identified. The dog owner allegedly threatened the police after the incident.
