The dog is named Maiko and he is seven years old. He died on November 24. Accordingly, the dog was leading the Rangers into the targeted compound and because of the dog’s actions and presence, the enemies were eliminated. The handler of the doggo was one of those saved from the encounter. The dog was deployed to Afghanistan six times during his years of service. He took part of 50 Ranger-led direct action raids when he was still alive.
The dog was originally from Holland and went to the United States when it was more than a year old. He was able to complete Regimental Basic/Advanced Handler’s Course in January 2013 where he learned about patrol tactics, explosive detection, and tracking skills.
