An animal control officer was called about a stray dog near the Holy Cross Cemetery area. The animal control officer later shot the dog and caused its death. Now, citizens want to know why.
– An animal control officer shot a stray dog.
– The dog was not aggressive during the incident.
– Animal control said that the dog was rabid that is why it was shot.
A woman called animal control after the dog has been in the area for 10 minutes. The dog was not doing anything so they wanted someone to bring the dog to a safer place because if it gets out of the cemetery, it could get hit by a car. However, the woman, who called animal control and who owns a dog herself, was disappointed with the move done by the animal control officer. The woman said that the dog was not even aggressive.
The city officials responded saying that the dog was actually rabid that is why it was shot. The state regulations note, however, that a dog control officer has no authority to handle rabies cases. There must be an appointment first but obviously that was not the case regarding this matter.
It is unknown if the officer will be charged or if an investigation will be launched.
